James was born in Wanatah, Indiana to Ama and John Breseke.
James joined the US Army in 1944, three days after turning 18. He fought in WWII in France and Germany with the 100th Infantry Division for a year and a half and returned home shortly after the surrender of Germany. James then went to Purdue university where he got his degree in Electrical Engineering and met his wife of 62 years, Ruth Breseke. He received his MBA from the University of Missouri in 1966.
