Birth1474, Of Kirklington, Nottinghamshire, England
Death1502
Misc. Notes
The second Sir John married, at the age of 20, Jean Thorland, with whom he had five children. In 1502, the turbulent relations between England and Scotland ebbed with the signing of a peace treaty by Henry VII and his Scottish counterpart, James IV. The pact lasted less than a decade, but an event which accompanied the signing had a more lasting effect - the negotiation of a marriage between James and Henry's young daughter, Margaret. Sir John was one of 200 men who escorted the betrothed princess through Nottingham to Scotland in 1502. As Sir John died that year at the age of 28, it can be assumed that his death was a result of the 300 mile journey to Edinburgh. The significance of this marriage was not realized for another century when, upon the death of Elizabeth I of England in 1603, their great-grandson would become heir to the thrones of both England and Scotland, thus uniting all of Great Britain under one crown.
